Job Summary:

The IT Coordinator - Implementer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing IT-related technical events and projects that support the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). This role ensures the successful execution of IT&C technical initiatives, overseeing event logistics, stakeholder coordination, and on-ice implementation.

The position operates on a ¾-time schedule during the planning season (approximately April to September) to prepare for deployment, followed by full deployment to Antarctica during the Austral summer (October to March) to provide direct, on-site coordination and execution of technical events and support IT&C Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning Season (April – September, ¾ Time, Remote/CONUS)

  • Technical Event & Project Coordination
    • Plan and manage IT and Communications technical events, including vendor maintenance, partner agency activities, and infrastructure projects.
    • Serve as the primary liaison for NASA and Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) partnerships, ensuring alignment with USAP objectives.
    • Coordinate travel, cargo, workspace allocation, and scheduling needs for technical events.
    • Develop project deliverables, including financial plans, schedules, and administrative documentation.
    • Attend stakeholder meetings with NSF, ASC, NASA, JPSS, and other program partners; document action items and follow-ups.
    • Provide administrative and customer service support for incoming technical teams.
    • Ensure compliance with NSF/USAP policies for travel, training, and safety.

Austral Summer Deployment (October – March, Full Time, Antarctica)

  • On-Ice Coordination & Execution
    • Act as the primary point of contact for IT&C technical events at McMurdo Station South Pole, Palmer Station, and other USAP locations as necessary.
    • Oversee logistics, scheduling, and field support for vendor and partner agency activities.
    • Directly support NASA, JPSS, and other satellite communications initiatives.
    • Work closely with IT&C management, station operations, and science teams to ensure smooth project execution.
    • Provide hands-on support for satellite terminal maintenance, radio communications, and other IT infrastructure activities as needed.
    • Ensure all technical event personnel receive required safety and workplace training.
    • Monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and report status updates to stakeholders.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Assist IT&C management with operational tasks and process improvements.
  • Support emergency response or contingency operations as required.
  • Provide mentorship and training to new or incoming personnel.
  • Contribute to special projects, documentation efforts, and strategic IT initiatives.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • At least six years of experience in IT project management, customer service, or technical coordination.
  • At least three years of experience managing teams in a supervisory role.
  • Prior USAP or government contract experience preferred but not required.

Skills & Certifications:

  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Experience with enterprise application software and project management tools (Microsoft Project, Primavera, etc.).
  • Preferred: Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and stakeholders in a dynamic environment.
  • Self-starter with a proactive approach to problem-solving and process improvement.

Other Requirements:

  • Full deployment to Antarctica during the Austral summer (October – March).
  • ¾-time remote work during the planning season (April – September).
  • Ability to pass all necessary physical, dental, and psychological exams for Antarctic deployment.
  • US citizenship or permanent residency required.
